About the maker
Shigeyoshi Ichino (1942–2011, Tachiqui, Tamba, Japan) was a potter who trained in a traditional family workshop and became fully skilled in the techniques of his region before coming to the UK. He worked at the Leach Pottery in St Ives from 1969 to 1973, where he brought his mastery of Japanese pottery to the studio and contributed to its international exchange of ideas.
On returning to Japan, Ichino took over his family workshop in Tamba and continued to make ceramics that combined traditional Japanese methods with modern approaches. He exhibited widely and built a reputation for work that respected historical techniques while exploring innovative forms and surfaces.
