David Leach

About the maker

David Leach (1911–2005) was Bernard Leach’s eldest son. He began his apprenticeship at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall, in 1930, before training as a pottery manager at North Staffordshire Technical College from 1935 to 1937. He later managed the Leach Pottery, overseeing significant changes including the transition from a wood-burning to an oil-burning kiln and the modernisation of the workshop. In 1955, David left St Ives to establish the Lowerdown Pottery at Bovey Tracey, Devon.
