About the maker

Paul Dennis is a British studio potter specialising in wood-fired stoneware. His early interest in pottery was influenced by visits to potteries in Cornwall, particularly work by Scott Marshall at Boscean Pottery near St. Just. He began his practical training at Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall in 1995, working under Seth and Ara Cardew on wood-fired stoneware.

From 1996 to 1999, he worked at Muchelney Pottery in Somerset with John Leach and Nick Rees, continuing to develop his skills in wood-fired stoneware. In 2000, he established his own studio in Upton, Somerset, where he built a two-chamber climbing kiln of approximately 100 cubic feet and has continued firing it since.

His work combines traditional wood-firing techniques with natural, locally sourced materials. Glazes are formulated from wood ashes, stone dusts, and river silts, producing surfaces that are both individual and expressive while retaining the functional qualities of studio pottery.
