Hamish Jackson explores the connection between local materials and traditional craft. After completing an apprenticeship with Mark Hewitt in 2018, Hamish gained international experience working in potteries across England, Thailand, and Japan, including a residency at the Shigaraki Cultural Park and the North Carolina Pottery Center in Seagrove.
Driven by a fascination with local clays and natural materials, he began experimenting with mixing his own clay and creating glazes from local rocks in North Carolina. In 2020, Hamish pursued an MFA in ceramics at Utah State University, where he combined studies in glaze chemistry and geology. His thesis show, Tea Time with the Devil, featured glazes made primarily from a local granite from Devil’s Playground in northwestern Utah.
From 2023 to 2025, he served as artist-in-residence at Pleasant Hill Pottery in Oregon, focusing on wood-fired ceramics, while teaching at Lane Community College and leading workshops. In 2025, Hamish and his family returned to England, settling in St Ives, Cornwall, where he now works at the Leach Pottery as part of the Learning and Participation team.
Hamish shares his life and studio with his wife, Lauren, and their daughters, Juniper and Flora, and continues to be inspired by the landscapes and materials of every place he calls home.
