Tony Laverick

About the maker

Tony Laverick is a British ceramic artist who established his own studio in 1988 following earlier study in ceramics and work within the ceramic industry in Stoke‑on‑Trent, including as a designer for Coalport China (part of the Wedgwood group). His background in industry has given him a broad understanding of ceramic materials and techniques, informing both his practical skill and creative exploration.

Laverick’s work draws on a wide range of artistic influences, including late 19th and early 20th‑century Royal Doulton art ware, the ceramics of French potter Clément Massier and the abstract art of Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian, Nicholson, Brancusi and Rodchenko, as well as the architectural designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. While inspired by these sources, he has developed his own original vision, evolving unique glazes and surface techniques through many years of experimentation and ongoing creative enquiry.

Known for a willingness to embrace risk and experiment widely with form, surface and firing, Laverick’s work reflects a balance of disciplined technique and intuitive judgement. In recognition of his contribution to contemporary ceramics, he was made a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association in 2014 and was selected as a member of Contemporary Applied Arts in 2015.
