About the maker
Ken Matsuzaki (b. 1950) was born in Tokyo, where he grew up immersed in art and culture. His family’s influence helped spark an interest in ceramics, which he developed around the age of 16. In 1972, after graduating from Tamagawa University’s College of Arts, Matsuzaki began a three-year apprenticeship with National Living Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka.
As his apprenticeship neared its conclusion, Matsuzaki requested to extend it for a further two years to focus on developing his own style. During this time, he began creating his own motifs and palette of glazes, which he continued to explore over the following fifteen years.
Matsuzaki has exhibited widely in Japan, the United States, and the UK, and his work is held in major galleries and private collections worldwide, recognised for its technical mastery, distinctive aesthetic, and balance of traditional and personal expression.
