Kevin De choisy

About the maker

Kevin de Choisy (1954–2020) was a British studio potter whose work combined technical skill with an engagement with historical and cultural ceramic traditions. He trained at Harrow School of Art in the mid-1970s under Colin Pearson and Walter Keeler and spent time in New Mexico and Arizona between 1978 and 1980 studying Native American Pueblo pottery. In 1984 he returned to the United States to work as a production thrower and designer at Rowe Pottery Works in Wisconsin before living and working in Glastonbury until his death in 2020.

De Choisy was particularly interested in the versatility of polychrome and creamware glazes developed in England during the Industrial Revolution. His work explored the range of colour, surface, and effect these glazes offered, combining aesthetic refinement with thoughtful craftsmanship. Central to his practice was a concern with the enduring symbols and ideas of the English ceramic tradition, expressed through forms and glazes that connected contemporary experience with historical continuity.
