The Potter’s Pick is our monthly maker highlight, chosen by potter John Bedding, founder of St Ives Ceramics.
For our June Potter’s Pick John has chosen potter Mary Rich.

Mary Rich (1940- 2022) was a British potter celebrated for her porcelain vessels featuring geometric patterns and lustrous gold detailing. Her work is known for its refined elegance and technical precision.
Mary studied painting and ceramics at Bournemouth College of Art, then worked with David Leach before establishing her own studio in Cornwall. She was a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and a founding member of the Cornwall Crafts Association.

John Bedding on this month’s Potter’s Pick:
“When I first came across Mary’s work I must admit I wasn’t impressed. I was at the time heavily influenced by the Leach style; small pots decorated with gold lustre didn’t interest me. But it is a lesson to be learnt that we shouldn’t get too blinded by our prejudices. Years later I looked at her work again and found in them real artistry and skill. Painting with gold lustre in such fine detail takes a steady hand and years of practice, and a unique craftsperson.”
“The pots are well made, balanced, and well thought out. They are evocative of an Egyptian pageant, with the rich colours and bright gold of the Pharaohs. I see in them a jewel- like precious quality, and for me Mary made the finest pots in this genre. The small group that I have acquired are some of the best examples I have seen of Mary’s work, and deserve to be in anyone’s collection.”
