The Potter’s Pick is our monthly maker highlight, chosen by potter John Bedding, founder of St Ives Ceramics.
For our July Potter’s Pick John has chosen potter Niek Hoogland.

Born and raised in a town shaped by the clay dug from its own soil, Hoogland’s practice draws directly on the red river clays of the Maas and Rhine that have long supported local ceramic production. These clays were historically used for bricks, pipes and roof tiles, and for the celebrated Tegelen earthenware — red clay covered with white slip and decorated with coloured slips and sgraffito before firing.

John Bedding on this month’s Potter’s Pick:
“Slip trailing is a demanding and skilful technique, Niek’s use of it is a serious contender for the most accomplished I have come across in modern ceramics. It needs confidence and positivity to draw with liquid clay onto the pristine surface of a pot. It is akin to Japanese calligraphy; that of precise and economic statements and movement. Niek uses it with a flourish and creativity, and in a style of his own. His colourful bright designs of stylised birds and fish are well thought out, and reflect the character of the man behind them. It always amazes me how a person’s character and lifestyle are imposed on their pots. Niek has an honest and straightforward approach to life, simple, and with a healthy respect for nature and his environment.”
“The pots are well made, balanced, and well thought out. They are evocative of an Egyptian pageant, with the rich colours and bright gold of the Pharaohs. I see in them a jewel- like precious quality, and for me Mary made the finest pots in this genre. The small group that I have acquired are some of the best examples I have seen of Mary’s work, and deserve to be in anyone’s collection.”
“His pots are direct and without artifice; a big man with a light touch. His pots are meant for everyday use, but they are just as appealing as decorative items, although I suspect Niek would rather they be handled and used.
I love to have contemporary European potters in the gallery as they always have a different take on their craft. Their national character and differing materials show through. Unfortunately Brexit and new taxes have persuaded many, it is not worthwhile to come or send pots. I hope Niek continues his affection for England and continues to come to our shores and brings us more of his brilliant earthenware pots.”
