About the maker
Andrew Marshall (b. November 1952, St Ives, UK) is a ceramic artist whose work reflects a deep engagement with both Eastern and Western pottery traditions. The son of William and Marjory Marshall, Andrew spent much of his childhood at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, absorbing the philosophy and practice of ‘East meets West’ and meeting many visiting Japanese potters.
Trained as a chemist, he lived and worked in Lublin, Poland, during the early 1970s, developing a lasting appreciation for the pottery traditions of northern and eastern Europe. Returning to Cornwall in the late 1970s, he assisted his father in designing and building a large twin-chambered Japanese oil/wood-fired kiln at Lelant near St Ives. This kiln enabled extensive experimentation with oriental glazes, including ash and celadons, applied to moulded bottles, teaware, cut-sided bowls, and serving dishes.
Andrew’s work draws inspiration from Bavarian Kröninger pottery and traditional Korean Hakeme bowls. He complements his stoneware with earthenware made in the style of German and Moravian wares, producing jugs, bowls, dishes, and cisterns decorated with splashed pigments over slipped clay and finished with his own St Erth glaze.
